Banks are able to pay people, especially institutions with services. And rather than compete on interest rate, they compete on price services. Are you really going to move your $8,000 checking account over to a new bank for one extra percent? I would suspect that the effect is actually bigger for institutional deposits than it is for retail depositors. In addition to other non price services, which might include investment banking advice or things along that nature that make deposits a little bit more sticky at the institutional level, as well as the retail level.
