Shunt occurs when the blood does not undergo oxygenation at the lungs. This can happen if there is no blood flow access to the site of gas exchange, as in an intracardiach shunt. Most patients with hypoxia should have a chest x-ray done to look for potentially life-threatening causes such as pneumothorax and pneumonia.
