Prince's Imperial Period
Prince was one of the first black artists to place on a chart dominated by Pink Floyd and Zeezy Top. His epic single Purple Rain, the title track of both his 1984 debut movie and its accompanying Magnum Opus album, was inspired by power ballad work of such rock titans as Bob Seager. Prince even sought clearance from Journey's Jonathan King before releasing it in 1984. It made number two on the pop chart, number four on the R&B chart, and number 18 on the rock chart. A chart that had already been topped multiple times by Tom Petty.
