i think a big part of this was obama's promise and then the reality of bam administration in this resulting pretty intense disiillusionment. So many people who would go on to participate and occupy had invested these enormous hopes in his presidency. And i remember standing there in westphilly, being pleased that he won, but also seeing this mass energy around him as a sign that the left didn't have any power or influence at all. But three years later, after obama had spent three years between the people with their pitchforks and the bankers, things had changed dramatically.
