The modern system of tempering was known to the pythagoreans and the platonists. It's really the mathematical adjustment of the fifth overtone, right from the fundamental that's the key. So all this fuss about a forty four is just a tempest in the teapot. People who don't understand it a spirit. But what e the so called natural tone scale? I always tell them to listen to the first lecture of leonard bernstein which shows why that adjustment was made. Listen to the first lectures in that series where he demonstrates the harmonic series but you can use any number too.
