A Brief History of the Estates General in France

Until 1789, there were no regular representative institutions in France that ordinary citizens could elect delegates too. The system of representation comes into being because the monarchy is going bankrupt. An estates general was a representative assembly that all of the king's subjects, even in some cases women, could elect representatives too. This declaration metaphorically extends power to the entire nation.
