Polycentric Governance Across Multiple Scales
It makes me wonder if we'll end up with systems. We acknowledge that for certain types of shared resources, there are economies of scale and so something like roads, it will always make sense for us to govern collectively. And then we have these more locally organized spaces, which don't necessarily have economies of scale - Metcalf's law. So maybe instead of having this sort of huge monolithic social contract that everyone who is the citizen of or resident of a given country has to basically say yes to, we just have many different social contracts that exist at different layers of our lives based on the type of resource we're governing.
