There were two major fires that affected new york city during the british occupation. The first one was in 17 forty one, when a fire was set at fort george and many other homes and businesses were destroyed. A massive witch hunt went on at this time because people thought it was some kind of slave revolt or plot against poor whites. That was the first major fire. Then we have the second one which happened on september 20 first and 20 second in 17 76. It destroyed between 405 hundred buildings, or basically one quarter of the entire city.
