Oceanographic Data Is Vital to Ecology and Conservation
The Southern Ocean plays an outsized role in the climate system. It takes up about three quarters of the heat and half of the carbon dioxide that the ocean takes up for us. We have sometimes called it the lungs of the ocean. A study out just this week shows that whales, which not only play a pivotal role in keeping ecosystems healthy, might also be so massive that they act as carbon sinks.
