The Allegory in South African Story Telling

The allegory is a way of creating meaning on multiple levels, or or introducing various levelsof abstraction. And i think it's really important in south african story telling. No indigenous south africa orator uses lots of these allegorical forms - riddles, proverbs, myths and folk tales. When the european missionaries arrive, they turn up with allegorical taxes. Well, you know, the bible, john bunyan, and this is the basis for missionary schooling. It's the schooling that these first black intellectuals are given. So i think, as a result, allegorys is the form that the first South African writing takes.
