At the time, Texas law required that any Indian-born child could only be adopted by someone with Indian blood. And perhaps more significantly than that, if one looks at Roy Rogers' radio show and television show, he insisted that if any Indian appeared in his show, they had to be a friend to the main character. So all in all, why does all of this matter? What I've been saying here about cowboys and Indians. In this way, the Indian appears over and over again in the mythology of the West as an ambiguous figure.
