The leukemia cells essentially just get completely stuck within the bone marrow and don't actually come out into the periphery. You're obscuring the ability of the bone marrow to make normal healthy white blood cells. The biggest trick is in that time period, just making sure that you're hydrating the kids as best you possibly can.
