The Air Force and the Air Force in Vietnam
The Air Force adopted several Navy aircraft for its operations throughout the 1960s. The mainstay fighter in Vietnam was the Navy's F4 Phantom 2, which reached first flight in May 1958. Senator Symington reported his interaction with no fewer than 100 pilots who told him that they would prefer to fly in their opponents plane, the maneuverable Soviet MiG-21. Admiral Hyman Rickover complained that Soviets built almost three times as many combatant ships as the United States.
