CHAPTER

The Importance of Women's History

The lives of women at the Locker Asylum are important because they tell us about people on the margins of society. They're also caught up in institutions and policies that even today continue to shape the experience of women who are living outside of society's norms. For Patrick, the creative process of fictionalising the women brought a new depth to his approach as a historian. He hopes too that the dramatic telling of their lives will encourage a wider audience to think more deeply about the attitudes facing women today.
