Is Veganism Just a Widening of the Circle of Concern?
The reason most of us have compassion for other humans is because we care about their sentience. And nearly every human cares about non-humans too, whether it's selected animals in a wild or companion animals as well. So there's this sort of theoretical latent agreement of humanity with that centiocentric moral scope already. It's just that our current social norms train us out of that stance and turn us away from the implications.
