Ugly is more than a physical description for a woman. It's meant to be shorthand for worthless, undesirable, undeserving and lesbians are by popular definition ugly women. In these ways, ugliness functions to keep the bounds of gender in check and is used to keep bodies in line in their presumed place. The second quote takes us to Nigeria. Many dark skinned black women all over the world have been made to bear the brunt of society's obsession with a proximity to whiteness. Even the formative systems which were meant to protect us continue to contribute to this harm.
