The French invasion and conquest of Algeria was an epoch-changing event for the history, not just of the Maghreb, but really of the Muslim world. It took the French decades to pacify the whole territory, and in the course of their conquest, nearly a million Algerians died. To the Algerians, the conquerors were always a rumi-yin, Romans. Many men, warriors, who were acclaimed as the Mahadi rose up to fight the French.
