Is It Possible to Overthrow the Social Order?

In places where enslavement seemed like a consequence of misfortune, captivity, being conquered in war, someone who found themselves essentially on the wrong side of the master-slave relationship. If they were manumitted or they escaped, it was not unusual for them to become slave. There you have what we might think of today as class privilege: I'm not supposed to be enslaved. That's for other people. And once returning to the place of social status and privilege, they return back to their rightful place of being able to trade other people. You can't escape the stain of being of enslaved background, even if you are free.
