The Coexistence of Liberty and Slavery

The way in which republican freedom is defined is that it's the opposite of slavery. Slavery just was, as a legal matter, to be subject to the will of another. For there to be a class of kind of free workers in this economy, their freedom presupposed slavery. The modern idea is that everybody is fundamentally politically and morally equal. But what it means is that nobody is naturally a slave to any one else. And therefore, all political ideas must be universalizable - they must apply to everyone.
