When we try to maximize the likelihood that is the same as maximizing the log of the likelihood of all the observations. But when you multiply that by minus two, it flips. We actually try to minimize the negative two log likelihood. So this becomes a problem of minimizing a particular function. You're trying to minimize the fit function to get the maximum likelihood estimate.
