The Jesuit Influence on the Arts
After Trent, the Jesuits sought to discipline and reform erroneous responses to sacred images. But they also steadfastly defended their value as devotional and instructional tools. The earliest Jesuit illustrated books were only produced in Antwerp in 1566. In the 17th century they went on to become the most prolific producers of emblem books.
