There's nothing in common between the sworn virgins al-Abania and the moushe of Oaxaca and the Fafafine of Samoa they're just put under this third gender category. It's a useful label for saying there's this thing that people sometimes do when they don't know how to cope with people who step outside their sex roles. I wonder will we one day though because I do think it's hard to be a girlish boy when you're four and six and eight, she says.
