The Disparity Between Mormon Literature and Scripture
The word Salamander was used in the 1820s to refer to a mythical being thought to be able to live in fire. That meaning is a good approximation of the description Joseph Smith gave of the angel Moroni. So we can see through that quote that they're already trying to have to adjust by accepting the authenticity of a letter that pretty much just credits almost everything that they've known already.
