These folks knew exactly what they were looking for in terms of soil and environment. They chose places where precipitation was above a certain level and the temperatures weren't too cold. The L.B.K. people hopped from one area of loose soil, this is extremely fertile, wind-blown sediment, to the next. Despite their numbers and success, we have to understand that this was a patchy colonization.
