Are We All So Concerned About Our Status?
As our species was evolving, where you were in your status meant everything. So it's ingrained in us to be very concerned about our status. One of the riskiest things we do to increase our status is be in front of other people. And if we mess that up, at least from an evolutionary perspective, it had dire consequences. It starts right around the teen age years when people begin to feel social and be part of a social community.
