Chikovsky's Second Movement

This is a remarkably bleak first movement, especially if you stay with what Chikovsky wrote. A delude is brutally smashed down, and the entire orchestra plays the march as one. This relentless march is absolutely merciless even as instruments fall away. The army of fate marches off, unmoved by the second theme, and by desperate pleas. It ends in the deep sounds of the basses, almost growling, as the sound of this movement is unceremoniously snuffed out.
