The notion of a violation is so tied to one's status and one's racial identity that even in cases where Black men were accused of raping white women, the female wasn't identified as a white woman. So it was just interesting, the utter unwillingness of the law to acknowledge this as a category of injury at all. The privileges of the liberal political imagination are constituted by a set of exclusions. And I think that with black folks in the US context, I mean, we have been the governed,. we have been ruled by the state, but certainly, overwhelmingly, we've been without the quote unquote basic rights and entitlements that accompany that category of citizen.
