Internment gave the police and the army the power to pick up anyone off the street at any time for any reason,. And hold them without trial for as long as they deemed necessary. In their fervor to ensnare and root out members of the i R A, some of these detainees were subjected to daily, prolonged torture. It produced acute anxiety states, personality changes, depression and sometimes an early death.
