How Important Is Family for Succession?
In the summer of 1153, King Stephen wants to make a truce with Henry Plantagenet. To do so, he might have to agree to Henry replacing Eustace in the line of English succession. God entertained thoughts of peace, and not affliction for England, wrote one chronicler. And so an exasperated God goes all Old Testament on Eustace. Urged on by the outraged spirit of Snedmund, people believe, the Lord strikes Eustace down with a severe illness. Around 17 August 1153, he dies and is taken to Fava Shammabi to be buried.
