The Genetic Resistance to Shagas Disease in the Amazon

A new study has found that certain indigenous populations in the Amazon have a genetic resistance to infections from a Shagas disease. It's spread by a parasite called tripanosoma cruzy or just tea-cruzy, which is transmitted to us by an insect called a kissing bug. Up to 30% of those infected develop congestive heart failure and many more live with chronic Shagas for the rest of their lives.
