What Was It Like to Work in the Anti-Apartheid Movement?

In 1994, you were sent by the Guardian to South Africa to cover the country's first democratic elections. Why did they choose you and what was it like to be a witness to such a historic change? Well, they chose me because they were, first of all, I'd gotten a bursary from the Guardian, so I was known. And then that night, which was the election took place over three days, I went to stay with the family in Sweater and go vote with them. You know, I really, really screwed it up originally. I kind of knew too much, I'd seen too much,. I couldn't put all of that into words originally.
