WhatsApp has a very client heavy architecture and what this means is in order to launch new features to users, they have to update their client which is the app version. For example, you have to be very deliberate about features and the quality of them when you roll them out because rolling back is not as easy. And then number three, kind of following along those lines, designing for some of the error states, so you have that in mind for those that may not be on the latest app version. These are just some really basic examples but I've also been reading up on the technical paper for end-to-end encryption because WhatsApp uses into an encryption.
