Mentorship Feedback Loops
There's a trade-off between doing your own independent research looking for a mentor versus assisting somebody on an existing project there even if it doesn't have like the fellowship structure. If you already bring your own funding I think that opens up more doors than if you are having to get the academic to a like university sign off things and get funding. A certain kind of entrepreneurial person who will learn especially fast if they just like chuck themselves in the deep end and they build a thing like super themselves is hard to say if you're that kind of person.
