Is There a Place for It?
There's many solutions for this problem. I don't think there's too much involved in packing a binary asset into your application. It only does one thing, so as long as it does that, then I think we're good. Mark Bates was actually or is working on or was before this proposal because this proposal may supersede it. But he's working on a new API that mirrored the OS package. That may well be cool. And the nice thing is, Wales could adopt that and upgrade that and it almost wouldn't change anything for anybody, would it?
