In the late 13th century, first efforts to control food in England are aimed at bread and ale. Officers in local courts in say your average village who are called ale tasters. Their job it was to go around and taste the ale that was for sale. And so they would taste it and say, oh, well, this is a half penny ale or this is one penny ale.
