The Laws of Nature and Counterfactual Reasoning

Do we really need laws of nature in the first place? Couldn't we get by with just saying this is something that seems to hold, it works very well for us. I guess what we've been doing is focusing on the nature of reality and the two sorts of theories you've been talking about. People have been trying to explain what's going on when we or anyone postulates a law of nature. But now the question is whether we really need to invoke the kind of metaphysical accounts of laws  in order to be able to do that kind of thing.
