This is leslie martines speaking at a meeting organized by fresno's leaders last july. Specifically, it's the board of supervisors who oversee the county's pendemic response. Until now, this board has failed the hard working communities of gontua, creek, three rocks, lenaire, riverdale, cawwa and so many others. And i know this because they call my sephone and tell me what it has been during this pandemic.

For more than a century, public health researchers have demonstrated how poverty and discrimination drive disease and the coronavirus pandemic has only reinforced this.

In a Coronapod special, Nature reporter Amy Maxmen takes us with her through eight months of reporting in the San Joaquin valley, a part of rural California where COVID's unequal toll has proven deadly.
