What you're seeing is radiation from matter and radiation basically in equilibrium together. That's a maximum entropy state of matter and radiation. What you're not seeing in that is the effects of gravity. The universe was extraordinarily uniform in the early stays. So what you're see is great uniformity over the sky. In other words, you're seeing combination of this and this. Now this seems to me to be an extraordinary puzzle. I never understand why cosmologists don't list as the big puzzles of cosmology.
