Lambert and the Derby Petition

disagreements over the next parliament spilled out into the open. In september 16 59, the rump formed a committee to hammer out the terms of the new parliament. But it soon leaked that hazelrig was back to pushing for cruiter elections. And when this was unacceptable to the army, lambert's own regiment rode up and submitted the derby petition. The petition made the by now standard issue soldierly demands for back pay and pensions. They also demanded a reorganized general staff that would make lambert the number two man behind general fleetwood. He refused the commission, something lambert's allies in the army were none too happy about.
