In 19 72, she became the first black woman at chicago to earn a doctorate in human development. She was very aware of the profound raceism that black americans face and felt higher education was best way for her to empower herself. There's a huge blind spot in the history of psychology in this specific time period where people were talking about sexism and sexest abuse against psychiatry and racest abuse. The same thing happened with black women here. People talked about black men being diagnosed with skitzopreni on much higher levels but there wasn't focus on the intersection of black women's mental health.
