Uber Eats Takes a Stand on Ghost Kitchens
Uber Eats announced last week that it was cracking down on what it calls virtual brands, especially those that sell similar menu items under different restaurant names. 5,000 online storefronts will disappear from the app, which adds up to 13 percent of virtual brands in North America. Uber Eats guidelines actually have something of a precedent. Last year, rival DoorDash rolled out similar guidelines requiring that online restaurants have differentiated menus in at least eight items,. Grubhub last month began monitoring the number of brands stemming from the same physical address.
