Are Grades Inherently Motivating?

If you mark an assignment or maybe even a mock exam, do you put a grade on that? Or is it just a mark? And could you argue the mark has the same impact as the grade or are they different? Yeah, the certain times when this is unavoidable. When it comes to these big assessments where at Key Stage 3, we use a percentage out of 100.
