The Greatness of Athens
Pericles states that he chose to emphasize the greatness of Athens in order to convey the necessity that the citizens of Athens must continue to support the war. To help drive this point home, he links his praise of the city to the dead Athenians whom he was speaking of that gave their lives to the cause of protecting the city and its citizens. He leads asserts that these men died gloriously, preferring death to submission or dishonor.
