A group of convicts tried to escape from McQuarrie Harbor in 1834. They had been whipped more than 800 times as a group and weren't on their best behavior. The plan involved convincing two soldiers to go fishing with them, leaving the other four men alone. A gunsmith converted old muskets into serviceable pistols so they could be used against the prisoners.
