Athens lost their position of dominance and as the sole kings of philosophy, that was a situation many other greek city states went through as well during the hellenistic age. That period is the origin of the phrase pyric victory. A people will use it when they're referring to a situation where technically they've won. In this case, rome made some brilliant sions,. and as a result of that, became an unstoppable sunami, just taking over everything.
