People who lost status, who had gone from being middle class to being poor, often much sicker than those who started the depression in poverty. These formerly middle class families were families that had the least skills in dealing with poverty. So what's the take away from all this? Hunger was widespread. It was caused by joblessness, rather than being caused by a sheer lack of food nation wide. And people who had previous experience with food innovation were better off than those without.
