Women and Caring in the Workplace
Women's lives have changed. They're now key actors in the workplace and economy. The assumption continues that they'll somehow manage to juggle paid work, motherhood and caring in their daily routines. Clearly we have to address the challenge of getting more men into jobs in the care sector. Changes to parental leave are needed to encourage fathers to take a bigger share of the caring of young children. But as we've heard, it needs to be affordable if it's going to be taken up. For now, patchy policies, expensive childcare and outdated assumptions reinforce ideas that caring is natural, female and cheap. It is definitely time to change this.
