The History of the Freemason Endowment
In this ritual, Joseph Smith combined new Testament rights such as anointing, footwashing and bathing with complicated Freemason initiation rituals. Not coincidentally, the first endowment ceremonies began about two months after Smith became a first degree Mason. Originally, it began with a fully nude head to toe bathing of the initiate that was supposed to wash them clean of the blood and sins of their generation. Starting in 1920, they allowed the initiate to wear a ritual poncho, which they called a shield.
