More Defensible Resources Increase Inequality

The wealthier groups become the more likely you are to see certain individuals monopolize surplus production or monopolize the resource base that generates that wealth. Sometimes these coordination collective action problems or, you know, cyclical increases in group size might have occurred in hunter gatherers may increase demand for more formalized leadership. But really to really kick that up and make that a more permanent, especially coercive kind of leadership, you really need the defensible resources where there's surplus production that can be defended and used to benefit your coalition.
