Why Do People Get Drunk?
There's something rather confusing about alcohol's prevalence in our history. For a substance which has such dangerous, poisonous side effects, you just assume it's an evolutionary mistake. Alcohol is hijacking a reward network in the brain that evolved to reward other types of behavior. And so we've figured out this pleasure button, and we just keep pushing it like a rat hitting a button to get cocaine delivered.
